Comprehensive Instruction

September 16, 2021 by Shannon Smith

What do we mean by “comprehensive”?

A table filled with buffet trays full of food.

There is no single process that is 100% effective in literacy instruction. A “buffet” of literacy instruction is necessary!

What does comprehensive literacy instruction include?

– Six Areas of Literacy Instruction

Click on the purple icons in the image below to explore the 6 main areas of literacy instruction

– Teacher Led and Student Led Activities

Teacher Lead

  • Letters and Sounds
  • Word Study
  • Reading Comprehension
  • Read Aloud

Student Led

  • Writing (Composition)
  • Sharing and Publishing
  • Self-Selected Reading

– Instruction Across Content Areas

Literacy instruction occurs throughout the school day, not just during ILA, Reading, English, etc.

– Emergent and Conventional Interventions

Emergent literacy is literacy instruction and an appropriate starting point, but it is not the end goal! Use the tool below to determine if a student is currently an emergent or conventional literacy learner. Navigate through the first slides by using the control bar at the bottom of slides. Once slides with questions about your student appear, click on the YES or NO button within the slides to continue.
